Tie Dye With Tumble Dye

At the American Camp Association conference I had a chance to visit with SEI and learn more about their products. They generously offered me the opportunity to try their Tumble Dye product. It's an easy to use use spray on dye that creates tie dye items without using any chemicals or doing any rinsing. It's ready to use, water based, non-toxic and easy to clean up.

The kit comes with three color dyes and an idea booklet. I found the product very easy to use as everything is premixed. You start by getting the shirt wet and twisting, tieing, knotting or folding as you would with any tie dye. Then with just a few shakes you're ready to spray the dye. With a little practice the spray is easy to control. The colors are very bright and vibrant.

Unlike regular tie dye, gloves are not necessary!  I was a little hesitant, but my hands cleaned up easily with soap and water. It is tie dye, so expect some mess but less than traditional tie dye. Overall I thought it was a good product.

Tip
Keep baby wipes or paper towels handy to wipe your hands and to clean up messes.

Instructions
Cover your work space.
Wet the shirt thoroughly. I ran my shirt through the washer to get it wet.

Place elastic bands on t shirt where desired to make divided sections.

Shake the bottle of dye thoroughly.

Hold the spray nozzle next to the shirt and saturate the banded area thoroughly.

Change colors between bands.

When all the areas between the bands are colored, go back through the areas and reapply color where necessary.  Be sure to look for deep folds or crevices.

Cut the elastic bands from the t shirt while it is still wet. 

You can add more color to areas if desired.  SEI recommends using the "scrunch method" to add more color.

Be sure to wash your hands to remove any dye before moving the shirt.  Dye from your hands could transfer to the shirt.

Allow the shirt to dry.  SEI recommends that the shirt be allowed to dry flat to keep colors from running downward.

Once your shirt is dry, dry it in the dryer for 20 minutes to set colors.
